That isn't a GT3 RSR. That's more of a 997 Cup MK. II with some additional winglets.

Its all fun and games until you get a ticket for failure to display license plate, despite the fact its clearly visible and the only plate they ever are going to read is the rear, and its a horribly stupid law when a large chunk of cars don't even come with mounts anymore for the front plate. Sorry I'm pissed that I got a ticket for this and the judge wouldn't repeal the 110$ fine even though I got it mounted before the court date.

I have a family friend who has one modified to the point of almost no longer being street legal and he still seems just as head over heels with it when he first picked it up. I am not a big Porsche guy but a GT3 definitely is on my list of awesome cars that I would like to own.

I worry about this all the time. I haven't gotten a ticket yet but I'm at risk.

Two of my cars don't have a license plate in the front. The other one does.

I only use the car that does have the front license plate (mounted in the required location) if I need to drive to the airport and leave a car parked there. I heard cops sometimes roam airport parking lots looking for cars that don't have front license plates or not. Not sure if it's true, but I'm too scared to find out...

But it's not supposed to go back there! What kind of sick deviant wants it in there, anyway?!

Have you got to drive a 997 yet?

Mine is a stock 997.2 C2. So not nearly as nice as your friend's car. But it's still awesome. I think if you got to drive any 997 through some canyons you'd become more of a Porsche guy!

Yeah I got a ticket for it on top of a speeding ticket when I got carried away on an empty stretch of highway. I felt really stupid too because my gf warned me that cops like to camp there and are really ticket happy. but i learned my lesson now, i just wish my local track was cheaper to go to so I don't end up getting carried away on the street. I know one of my friends got busted for expired tags and a failure to display on one his cars that he doesn't even drive and was just parked in a parking lot for his apartment building.

That is a bummer. If you get pulled over for one thing they will find anything else and fine you for it.

Track time is expensive. What about AutoX? It's not as fun but it's cheap and gets some of the speed needs out of your system.

I'm super careful about speeding now. I haven't got a ticket since late 2011. I try to never speed when going straight on a highway since it's easy for cops to hide and catch you. I push it a little through the canyons. It's still a risk but less so because some canyon roads don't have safe places for cops to hide. And it's a lot more fun for me to drive quick through turns than in a straight line.

No I haven't, Porsche has really stepped up in my eyes in the last few years. Sorry I have BMW DNA in my blood through and through. The odd thing is how he got his hands on it. Before he had a Viper which was done up to the extreme, it was lowered with slicks, a spoiler and splitters front and back, he had it for a while and ultimately crashed it really hard during a track event. He got more cash from the insurance then what he put into the whole thing and bought the GT3. I don't know how he played the insurance company like that but I need to find out.

I've looked into AutoX but there's nothing going on in the winter that I've found. I have a road i used to go to that's just winding road you cant actually speed on that never has any cops but its not so safe in the winter. I found it funny that the cop who pulled me tried to get me for my tires even though they're just 6 months old, they're the stock tires too that came on my car so they're not like road legal slicks or anything.

No need to be sorry! I'm a big BMW guy too. I've owned more BMWs than any other brand of car in my life. This makes me feel old but here are my past and former rides in chronological order of when I had them (all were used when I got them, I've yet to buy a brand new BMW):

Gone but not Forgotten:

1984 318i, 1981 633CSI, 1994 325is, 2001 X5

Current:

2011 E90 M3 Sedan, 2004 E46 M3 Coupe (for sale due to finances)

My 997 is my first Porsche. I love it and the E90 M3 equally. They're just much different cars and serve different purposes. I give the Porsche the edge if I'm by myself and don't need to carry anything large. The handling has become telepathic to me. It gives me so much feedback that I really feel like I can push it close to the limits without going overboard and spinning out. It's this "feel" that gets people so addicted to Porsches once they own one. It did take me a while though until the car felt like it fit like a glove. At first the rear-engine design was weird to me and I wasn't confident with it. But after 3 years I've learned the car so well that it feels like an extension of myself when I drive it. I don't yet feel that confident with the E90, but I've also not had it as long. The M3 and M5 are the ultimate "all occasion" cars to me because you have so much performance while being able to have multiple passengers and/or luggage.

That is scary that your friend had the big wreck in the Viper, but awesome he got more money from insurance than he had put into the car. Do you know if it was his regular insurance that paid him or if he had purchased track-day insurance? I heard that your regular insurance company won't cover track accidents and that you need track-day insurance to be covered. Not sure if that's true or not as I have not checked with my insurance company.

I'm spoiled because I'm in So Cal so we don't really have winter. I had the best canyon carving day of my life last Saturday.

That is BS that the cop tried to cite you for 6 month old tires!!

Yeah but the area I was in they get like 90% of their revenue from tickets so they just like to give you every possible violation they can, and basically there is no way to get a fine reduced or removed. I used to live in Central Oregon and they used to not care about anything you did, I was actually pretty good friends with a state trooper who would pull me over just to talk about my car, but now I live in the Portland are for work and all the cops are dicks and the weather's miserable and wet from fall through spring. I'm looking forwards to moving south again in a few years when I have the money to start my own business.

I should warn my friend. He moved to Portland last year and isn't a fast driver. But he should be careful for revenue traps.

There is a section of the freeway near me that is a constant revenue trap. Cops hide on the side and nail people for speeding, even if they're just going with the flow of rush hour traffic.
